The Project

Location

 Vision

The project aims to work with the idea of a good place that might represent a local centrality and a link between the different neighbouring areas. Communal facilities will be provided, and the feeling of security will be increased by an increase in permeability and the activation of inactive edges.

The project focused on creating design codes for various aspects of the built environment on a site located in Pelotas. This site has three condominiums and a brownfield site next to it (see neighbouring map). Our initial task for the project is to come up with detailed design codes for the site if it were to be redeveloped. There are no current plans for the redevelopment of this study area which means there is no master plan for the group to work on; the codes reflect a more general vision of the site (see below). Due to our group being part of B.U.D.S., we will have our detailed yet unfinished codes be the basis of the workshops hosted at UFPEL. The reason why our codes are not finished is because the B.U.D.S. project will use them to be a learning opportunity for overseas students in which they may use any aspects of them to develop their own during the workshops. At the end of the workshop week, four different design codes for this area will be produced. Each group will have touched on similar and different areas of the built environment, but all of them will not have a final version of their design codes. For this project, a total sum of five unfinished design codes will be used to highlight the overlapping design guidelines. Our project is not about creating finished detail codes but to test which ones are appropriate in Brazilian context.

Vision

The 2015 project will be based in the city of Pelotas, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Brazilian state, bordering Uruguay. The area is topographically flat and has strong links with a blue network made of natural lakes and creeks as well as artificial barrages (Barragem de Santa Barbara) and canals.

The area of intervention is composed by two blocks, the PAR Simon Bolivar and the adjoining greenfield on the south, in the neighbourhood of Balsa, in the central district (Bairro Centro) of Pelotas. The site is located in a strategic position, at walking distance from the city centre, the UFPel campus and the port.
